NOPI done for the season.

Posted on July 20, 2008 09:54 by brian

Canceling all remaining events.  I've never been a fan of the NOPI events, but it's sad to see such a popular and long running series have to shutdown mid-year like this.

Nice knowin' ya, Nelson Ledges...

Posted on July 18, 2008 17:49 by brian
Got some bad news today from my friends out in the Cleveland area.  Sounds like Nelson Ledges is most likely going to be sold (and relatively soon).  While I'm happy to hear that it's going to remain a racetrack, I'm also very sad to hear that the proposed plan is to turn it into another one of those "private/country club" racetracks.  I can only hope that someday it will once again become public so that we can head out and get some more laps around the ol' track again!

Battlestar Galactica for PS/2 mini-review.

Posted on July 11, 2008 17:44 by brian

Title may very well nearly be longer than this review!!!

Can't tell you much about the game because I never made it past the first level.  Played it a number of times, loved the game play for that first level, just never could defeat it.  Not sure what I missed, kept doing what it told me to do.  Was blowing up Cylon Raiders constantly, but always managed to lose...  Flight controls and graphics were great.  Interested in hearing how one actually gets through the first level...  Disappointed that I couldn't do it, since the game showed so much promise.

Oh well.  It held it's value well.  Got $9.50 for it at the local used game place (which is not known for paying much, my previous high dollar amount was a measly $5...)  :)

DC Headset microphone issue...

Posted on July 7, 2008 09:05 by brian
Thought I had a failure of the microphone on my headset (http://www.davidclark.com/HeadsetPgs/h10-134.htm) at first on our flight yesterday.  Wiggling things around up at the headset itself made it cut in/out, so I thought perhaps it's just a wiring issue with the headset (and not an airplane issue).  Very odd since they're not that old and don't have that many flights on them.  Finally figured out that the microphone itself screws into the boom and if it's at all loose, it becomes inconsistent...  New item for the checklist...  Check those microphones before flight to make sure they're tight!  :-)

Beware the ides of March

Posted on June 9, 2008 09:10 by brian

Well, OK, perhaps not...

However, beware the Java Calendar object.  While DATE and YEAR are 1 based, MONTH is zero based!  If you're just doing a comparison with a known month, no problem.  However, if you're expecting a useful int value for construction a date string (like say for passing to a SQL server as part of a query), you may meet with a most unpleasant surprise.

It appears that MONTH was just designed with direct comparisons in mind.  However, there is no other decent way to get a MONTH int out of the object, and building a big case to figure it out is just silly.  Sure wish they would have just made it 1 based and avoided this goofiness...
